Goldendoodle Puppies Introduction

Goldendoodle dogs are a crossbreed between a poodle and golden retriever. The cross is meant to produce a dog with mixed traits and the poodle’s signature non-shedding coat. It originated in North America in the late 1990’s. The crossbreeding can be done in several ways. The first method used is crossing a purebred poodle and a purebred golden retriever in what is referred to as First generation cross. Secondly, a goldendoodle can be crossbred with a poodle or golden retriever in what is known as Back-crossing. The other way to breed them is to breed a goldendoodle with another goldendoodle in what is called Multi-generation breeding. They all result in a breed that has the mixed traits of a golden retriever and a poodle dog.
Characteristics
Since the breed is a mix of poodle and golden retriever, it possesses both characteristics of the two breeds.
Size- The dog has an average shoulder height of 20-29 in that is, 51-74 cm. It weighs an average of 20-40kg. If it takes more poodle influence, the breed would most likely have a thinner coat and a shorter muzzle. On the other hand, if it takes more golden retriever influence it would have a wider neck and a longer muzzle. The breed can have short or long ears depending on the influence of the two breeds used for crossbreeding. The dog mostly has a v-shaped ridge from the forehead to the nose.

Coat- Its coat has fine hair that is thick. The hair can be curly or straight depending on which influence it acquires most. It is 4-7cm in length and forms a thick coat that shades the dog from adverse weather conditions. The coat provides a natural protection from heat and cold as it traps a lot of air inside. It comes in a variety of colors that include tan, white, chocolate, black, red, silver or a mix of the colors.

Character- Goldendoodles are highly intelligent and friendly to other animals, children and even strangers. They are family oriented meaning they adapt well to family life. It is also a highly social dog and thus cannot be depended upon for security as it is friendly to strangers. They don’t bark frequently thus cannot be relied upon to warn the owner of any imminent danger.

Temperament- This breed of dogs get along well with children, animals and strangers thus are said to have a low temperament. They even crave being around people and thus their tolerance towards people is very high. They cannot be spooked by little disturbance and tend want to please the owner no matter how assertive the owner is.

Care- Their hair need regular brushing or combing every few weeks to keep them neat and ensure that they are not infested by insects. A goldendoodle lives for 9-15 years. In this lifetime, they may be prone to health issues that affect golden retrievers and poodles. This may include hip dysplasia which is a malformed hip joint that causes lameness or arthritis. They may also have ear infections especially those with long ears as they are exposed to a lot. They may also have eye problems such as cataracts. They should immediately be taken to a veterinary doctor who will best know how to treat them. Despite being prone to this health issues, these dogs are less likely to suffer disease since they are a mixed breed. Mixing breeds is always done to help animals acquire better traits.

Training- Since these dogs are intelligent, they are highly trainable. They tend to want to please their master thus always are easy to train. Positive reinforcement is the most recommended way of approach when it comes to training them. They require moderate exercise and should not be overworked. They enjoy swimming and are not affected by water because of their thick coats. Daily walks or play time should be employed in their training and exercise to help them stay in good shape and fitness.
